Are you looking towards changing your site’s URL?, or is that you want to just change the “http://” to “https://”. If that is the case then you have come to the right place as today, I am going to show you exactly how you can change your site URL on WordPress.
To change the site’s URL, it is pretty straight forward, however it can be confusing for first-time WordPress users as the settings and interface of the WordPress is a little complicated.
To change the Site’s URL first, you need to go to Dashboard => Settings => General. It is on the General option where you will find the page where you can change the site’s URL.
Let me walk you though the process.
Step 1: Go to Dashboard
The first step is to go to your Dashboard, after logging in into your WordPress.
Step 2: Go to Settings => General
Once you have clicked on the Dashboard, you will find options for Settings.
Click on Settings and hover over to the General Option.
Step 3: Change your site’s URL in the WordPress Address URL and Site Address URL Section.
Once you reach the General Settings page, you will find a lot of options in this page. Here you can change the Site Title, Site Tagline, Administration Email Address, Language and much much more.
Most importantly, what we can change here is our Site’s URL. Which is what we were looking for?.
To change our Site’s URL, all we have to do is to head to the WordPress Address URL section and change our Site’s URL.
Note: There is also a section for Site Address URL. Normally, you want to keep the Site URL of this section same as the WordPress Address URL.
STEP 4: Click on the Save Button
Once, you have finished editing your Site’s URL, click on the save button. That’s it, you have successfully changed your site’s URL.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: My website completely reloaded after clicking the “Save” Button. Is there something wrong?
A: This is a great question, and it’s totally normal. Nothing to worry about. Whenever, we change the site’s URL in WordPress, we have to Re-Login into our site with the new URL. WordPress does this automatically for us, that’s why we are quickly directed to the Login page as soon as we hit the Save Button.
Q2: My Website Stats are not showing up on Google Analytics after making the changes to my Site’s URL. Why is it so?.
This is another great question and it’s correct, once you have changed your website URL, you have to actually create a new Property on Google Analytics and basically Create a new property on Google’s Search Console. While, normally the URL changes are just adding the “S” in front of the “https:” of your website URL, even that minor change does affect your Google Analytics Property and you will have to create a new one.
Q3: I have tried changing my Site’s URL from http: to https but it’s not working.
Normally, this happens when one, you haven’t bought SSL for your site, and two, you have not installed SSL on your website. Things can get really complicated when trying to add SSL into your site, especially if you site is hosted on Web hosting companies like Hostgator, Bluehost where we have to manually install SSL. This can be very confusing for those who are not good with technology. I highly recommend going with Siteground, if that’s possible for you because on Site Ground, you don’t have to buy an SSL nor do you have to worry about Installing it. SSL is included in the web hosting package and can be installed with a click of a button.
